QuickBooks Online says your bank file is too large? The 350 KB limit explained

QuickBooks Online rejects bank upload files over 350 KB. How to make the file smaller or split it so every transaction imports once.

QuickBooks Online has a size limit for bank and credit card files uploaded through Upload from file: 350 KB. A busy account's year of transactions, or an export full of extra columns, can easily pass that.

Make the file smaller first

Before splitting, remove what QuickBooks doesn't use. It only needs Date, Description, Amount (or Date, Description, Credit, Debit). Deleting balance, category, reference, card number and status columns often halves the size. Long descriptions with repeated text (for example "POS PURCHASE CARD 1234 ...") can also be trimmed.

Then split by date, never by row count alone

If the file is still over 350 KB, split it into periods: months or quarters. Rules that keep the import clean:

  • Every part keeps the header row. QuickBooks reads the first row of each file as headers.
  • Split on date boundaries so you can check each period against the bank statement.
  • Never overlap periods. QuickBooks does not reliably catch duplicates from overlapping uploads.
  • Upload the parts in order and check the balance after each.

Doing it automatically

When you prepare a file for QuickBooks Online in Rowvio, it keeps only the columns QuickBooks maps, and if the result is still over 350 KB it downloads as numbered parts, each with its own header and no overlapping rows.
